Wenger delighted as Arsenal thump Newcastle

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hailed star man Manu Adebayor after the Togo striker struck again in last night's 3-0 victory over Newcastle United.
Adebayor, whose best efforts could not lead his country to the African Nations Cup, took his tally for the season to 19 with a bullet header late in the first half.
It was a ninth strike in his last seven appearances - scoring in each and netting the opener in three successive league matches. Wenger was pleased with the efforts of his side, who have shown few ill effects from the Carling Cup semi-final defeat at Tottenham last week.
"He can score with his feet, in the air, on crosses with headers. He is a generous type of player, he works for the team.

Rams reject Barnes bid

Derby County manager Paul Jewell has confirmed that he has rejected a bid from Newcastle United for highly-rated teenage midfielder Giles Barnes.

However, Jewell dismissed the bid out of hand, telling the Rams' official website: "We got a phone call from Newcastle United about Giles Barnes, but the valuation was nowhere near what we believe he's worth.

The 19-year-old, who was also reported to be interesting Tottenham, is believed to have been the subject of a £2million offer by the Magpies.

"I'd like to keep him but, if the player wanted to go and the money was right, we wouldn't stand in his way.

Steve Howard, Matt Oakley, Andy Griffin and Jon Macken have already left Pride Park this month.
